Astilbe plants
Plantenkwekerij Kapteijns cultivates Astilbes with the sole purpose of  propagating the plants. The end products supplied by Kapteijns are used by customers to make pot plants or for the cultivation of cut flowers. Because of the excellent quality of the plant material, the Astilbe plants produced by Kapteijns are also ideal for export to countries such as American and Japan, which have strict health regulations relating to imported plants.

Kapteijns assorts all its Astilbe plants according to their destination.  In general, size 4 + (4 ‘noses’ (buds) or more) is used for pot plants and  plants with 2/3 or 1/2 ‘noses’ are often used for export. Once an order is received, depending on the time of year and on the customer’s requirements, the plants are temporarily frozen by being placed in a freezer. They can also be put into a wooden crate in order to be delivered fresh.

In any case, some of the plants remain at the nursery in order to be re-used as plant material for the new season.

Kapteijns propagates the Astilbe by cutting or chopping the bottom part of the plant into pieces with a knife. These pieces have so-called ‘noses’ (the bud from which a leaf or flower grows).
